University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is one of the charity efforts of Muhammadiyah that was founded in 1964 at the initiative of the figure of Muhammadiyah leadership in Malang. In the early, UMM was affiliated with University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta established by Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah Jakarta. At that time, UMM only had three faculties, including: faculty of law, faculty of economic, and faculty of training and education.
On July 1 1968, UMM officially separated from University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta. The management was organized by Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah Malang.
During the years 1968-1975, UMM added two faculties which were Social and Political Science and Islamic Studies. In 1975-1977, UMM opened two more faculties, Agriculture and Engineering. From 1983 to 2000, UMM opened several faculties, including: Psychology, Animal Husbandry, D-3 Nursing and Medical. In 1993, UMM opened Post Graduate Programs such as Masters of Management and Masters of Sociology. In 2009, UMM merged the Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Animal Husbandry-Fishery which became the Faculty of Agricomplex. The Pharmacy program became part of the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2007. Now UMM has ten faculties and two postgraduate programs.
UMM has three campuses: Campus I in Jl. Bandung No. 1, Campus II in Jl. Bendungan Sutami No. 188a and Campus III in Jl. Raya Tlogo Mas.
